 PRIMARY IMAGES

For this project I needed to gather imagery as a primary source of things that are important to me & things I correlate to people I've lost. These were all things I found at my grandparents house that have been there since I was little & have memories attached to them. My grandma collects teddy bears, she keeps the tags on them & places them on display all around the house & most of them were brought by my grandad for anniversaries & birthdays as they're something she loves. The grandfather clock is a sentimental item that's been passed down in the family & was a comfort when I slept over as its ticking would send me to sleep.
Flowers are related as that side of my family own a gardening & design business which was started by my grandad.

PLANNING PAGE:

This is a page on all the ideas I had of pieces I could produce including smaller details like the colour, possible style choice & layout as a whole. The bear & clock both have aesthetically pleasing compositions, whereas the bird feeder did not work at all due to the huge amount of open space. I realised if I wanted to include birds in any way, they would have to be a lot more zoomed in. This idea I put to the side as I preferred the other two.
I decided I should start with the bear as I already did the bear as a small scale watercolour piece & knew it worked well. After this, I would move onto the clock piece. This would mean I’d have a piece related to both of my grandparents, one with a more masculine feel, and the other with a more feminine feel due to image & colour choices. A teddy bear is typically more of a feminine object, whereas a clock is more of a masculine object. Therefore I wanted to choose soft pale colours for the bear, & darker slightly bolder brown tones for the clock.
I thought about adding lilac flowers to both pieces to create a link between them both, & also the idea of superstitions as lilac was not allowed in my family home growing up as my mum believed it brought bad luck. My grandma, however, would still always bring it into the house. This would keep the piece personal & would give more meaning to it.
