3. WHAT MAKES US HUMAN? (intro & initial ideas)
WHAT MAKES US HUMAN?
MIND, BODY & SOUL
Possible Interpretations:
Some initial interpretations of this topic title were our strong connection to water/nature, our body image, & what a soul is/looks like as these are what came to mind when I first read the title. As this topic is so open, there is endless routes you can go with it. You can link this topic to anything to do with humans, such as religion, politics, & human differences. I decided I wanted to look at our viewpoint of ourselves & others as I feel I can best translate this into art, whereas other ideas I would struggle with due to lack of knowledge on the topic & what to draw or create that represents this idea.
My Ideas & Possible Outcomes:
My initial ideas were based around the way in which we view ourselves & others. Many people struggle with body dysmorphia and/or self image which can hugely affect their confidence & life, they will commonly compare themselves to someone else. I want to show self discomfort and confusion in my work. To explore this I wanted to create images of distorted faces, possibly being pulled, torn or connected in odd ways, & play around with sizes of specific facial features. I wanted my work to express different emotions, particularly discomfort & confusion as these can be effectively done in an expressive way. Within this project I wanted to play with different styles of work as well so I can see what approach I want to take for a final outcome & what I feel best represents the mood & emotion I set out to express through my work.
Often I take a realistic approach to my work, mixed with an illustrative style; however, this can sometimes seem slightly plain & makes it hard to mix things in the background with the detailed image that's in front of it. Another issue is that the viewer of the piece can't engage with it or question it as much as they could with an abstract piece, as an abstract piece forces you to think about the image in front of you. It makes the work more open to interpretation meaning its more personal to the viewer. This is an aspect I would like to experiment with to help present deeper emotion & expression in my work.
