PLANNING FINAL OUTCOME
For my final outcome, I want to produce a series of 4 framed pieces that have a similar style but include different imagery, using a mix of medias. I would like these pieces to have a flow, so I want to come up with a story behind them that is open to interpretation.
I began researching different symbolism behind birds & found images of them in certain poses that I liked to provide a reference for my initial sketches. Whilst drawing them out, I had to think about the levels of detail & how it would look simplified as a string piece. A lot of the imagery includes smaller details, so my plan is to add more colour by possibly doing some embroidery / using thread which will allow me to add smaller details such as flowers. I already included thread in my last robin piece to add a pop of colour to its chest, so it wont look out of place if I continue this on the others to.
For these, I chose a Crane which is an elegant bird that symbolises good luck & a long life, & is believed to grant wishes. I feel as though the pose of this bird represents strength & beauty which is something I really wanted to express through my work (spoke more about on last blog page). I want to add embroidery flowers at the bottom to make this piece look more colourful & positive, rather than having a dark bold image like the one I created previously. Furthermore, I want to keep the bold gold circle throughout all my pieces as I feel it would connect them all together. The circle is like a sun, lighting up the birds which to me, symbolises life being sacred & special. It hints towards life being continuous to. As long as the sun exists, so does life.
My other bird of choice is bluebirds. I wanted to include two of these that interact with each other in some way. I chose to have them holding string in their beaks, connected in the centre of the piece in a bow. This is because bluebirds symbolise joy, hope, & connection. I felt two birds would make more sense in expressing this symbolism than just the one, & to show their connection to each other, I thought string would 'tie' them together, including the bow in the centre, like how we tie our laces, or use to decorate presents that we give to others we feel connected to.
I did end up altering this sketch & getting rid of the branch they are positioned on & moving the sun so it's larger & behind them like in the other pieces. This composition looked a lot more pleasing in my opinion, as the wooden branch would have been difficult to create using string. I didn't want it to take away from the birds as they should be the focal point of the piece.
The other sketch I did was of a blackbird with two heads. This was an experimental sketch that is a very modern tattoo style drawing. It's more imaginative, rather than using reference from a real photo of birds. Some people believe that if you see two blackbirds together, it is a warning. This suggests misfortune or bad luck. The two heads would suggest two blackbirds, & the eye in the body which looks into the future. I like this design, but not for this project. It doesn't have the same vibe or style as the rest of my work so it didn't make sense for me to do it.
