After looking into different artists and work related to lace, I wanted to create something inspired by the 'lace not lace' exhibition I looked at on a previous blog page. Creating a piece in response to Newstead's lace exhibition, my aim was not to directly use lace within my work, but to think outside the box and combine things that inspired me the most whilst I was there. Such as; shadows creates by light through lace patterns, threading of material to create an image, and looking into natural materials. 

I decided I wanted to create something with string as its a natural material made up of many individual threads twisted together to make a larger thread. Its malleable making it easy to create interesting patterns or imagery out of.

 CRANES ARE A SYMBOL OF GOOD LUCK & A LONG LIFE, THEY ARE KNOWN TO GRANT WISHES.   A woman named Sadako Sasaki became ill in hospital with leukemia after being only two kilometres away from the atomic bomb that was dropped in Hiroshima, which had a very low survival rate at the time. She said that a crane is a sacred bird and lives for 100 years, and that if an ill person folds 1000 paper cranes, they will soon get well again, so she decided to do it herself. Sadako folded over 1000 paper cranes and continued to be strong for her family. Unfortunately in 1955, she died. Many people gathered money to build a monument in her honour and in honour of the many other people who died from the bomb. SUPERSTITIONS

SUPERSTITIONS I wanted to explore superstitions as part of my project because they can be a comfort for people after the passing of someone. I spoke about some examples on the memories & comforts page.  Sometimes it can be seen as a symbol rather than a superstition; ravens for example are a symbol of death & misfortune. This is due to their dark appearance, croaking call & their diet of carrion. In stories they act as phychoprompts, connecting the material world with the spirit world. If a Raven visits you, some people believe it means you are in need of some kind of guidance. It depends on which way you choose to look at things, a lot like people saying a black cat crossing the road is good luck/bad luck. For this first piece I used a reference photo I found off Pinterest & sketched it out then places a circle round it to give a background. STATUE DRAWING

  This is a piece I created using the reference picture above that I found on Pinterest. A statue I felt was a good link to the topic of Fabricated Nature, as it shows a man made form that represents a natural living being. Statues are created to teach us about history & beliefs, some of which linked to religion. These statues hold deeper meanings & stories that can be passed on over time to other generations. Not only do they tell stories, they show emotions through body language and facial expressions that help push forward the deeper meanings behind the work. The features of the faces on these statues are rather smooth, soft, & youthful, more so with the sculptures of women. Women and children are often presented as angels, which captures the societal views at that point in history.
