SEPARATE DRAWINGS & SKETCHES Personal Work This is a personal piece I did which wasn't part of my response to lace. Outside of college, I am looking to become a tattoo artist so I've been creating a portfolio for that for when I finish the course. One way it links to my project is it contains natural forms which is one of my project focuses. Flowers, butterflies and birds are used within lace patterns; this piece contrasts to these as its quite a dark and creepy image rather than pretty and delicate. This style is personal to me, and is commonly what I'm drawn to. However, doing this course I have to remove myself from my own preference and create more expressive experimental pieces in order to follow a project brief and expand my abilities/knowledge on different styles. Another way this piece relates to my lace work is it is almost completely symmetrical. Many lace patterns are repeated symmetrical patterns. Although this is an image not a pattern, it still can be fli...

ACETATE IMAGES

SKELETON DEVELOPMENT After creating the skeleton, I wanted to develop this idea further and create a stronger relation to lace, so I copied the skeleton onto acetate and began to layer the images over one another to create patterns. This turned out really well and in my opinion the patterns created through the layering of the image made some beautiful designs that change the entire piece. Unsuccessful: This one is too plain and doesn't overlap much, however the section that does gives a slight steampunk effect, with cogs at either side due to the parts that stick out. I think this one and the one below as a whole kind of look like a bug or insect. The one below makes me think of a tortoise.  My Favourites: I originally placed the skeletons in this circular pattern as it was the first idea that came to my head, and it turned out well due to its resemblance with a doily or table mat. In this one, the overlapping in the centre looks like a sun you would draw as a child (personal...

STRING SKELETON

EXPERIMENTING WITH STRING Original Sketch After looking into different artists and work related to lace, I wanted to create something inspired by the 'lace not lace' exhibition I looked at on a previous blog page. Creating a piece in response to Newstead's lace exhibition, my aim was not to directly use lace within my work, but to think outside the box and combine things that inspired me the most whilst I was there. Such as; shadows creates by light through lace patterns, threading of material to create an image, and looking into natural materials.  I decided I wanted to create something with string as its a natural material made up of many individual threads twisted together to make a larger thread. Its malleable making it easy to create interesting patterns or imagery out of.  Final Outcome LIGHT EXPERIMENTATION
