EXHIBITION PIECE

Image
For my exhibition piece I wanted to follow on with doing string work as I loved the way this turned out previously. This time my main focus was to push forward a contrast between life & death, along with the idea of history / time repeating itself. The idea of everything cycling right from the very beginning is an important pattern in history. Life continues as does death, with people, animals, & nature. The events that happen in the course of one life time tend to repeat in slightly different ways in another lifetime. For example; wars, terrorist attacks, illnesses, political events, protests, monarchy etc. Life is a continuous cycle right until death & even after.  To begin, I drew some thumbnail sketches of possible ideas I could then push forward.  After looking into the bird symbolism even more, I decided a robin would best fit this piece, as robins symbolise renewal of life, as does a phoenix. However, a phoenix is a mythical creature. It isn't real, ma...

INITIAL IDEAS

Image
When starting this topic my first idea was to continue my work on bones as bones relate to structure. Bones in a body are symmetrical, both sides of your body have the same bone structure. Some parts are more complex than others but they are a big part of us. One of many components that keep us alive & moving.  Another key focus for me was to look into imagery that symbolises life & death, & renewal of life. My mum always says 'history repeats itself', so this is something I wanted to push forward in my work through symbolism. This lead me to look at birds as they are seen by humans to mean certain things. Following on from my past work where I looked into superstition, I found many more birds that have symbolism that could be relevant to my work; War = an eagle  Hope, peace = a dove Renewal of life/rebirth = a robin, a stork Immorality, resurrection, life after death = a phoenix (Green & Egyptian Mythology), a vulture Death = a raven, a crow Healing = a caladr...

6. STRUCTURE

Image
Google Definition of Structure: The arrangement of & relations between the parts / elements of something complex In art, structure refers to the relation of parts to the relative proportions of the component elements. In basic terms it refers to 6 elements; mass/volume, perspective, texture, line, shape, & colour. It is the way in which the elements of a work of art are arranged to create a sense of unity & coherence. It is the foundation for an art piece & provides the framework for all other aspects of the work. Structure is very important in artwork as it gives the work a sense of order, balance, & unity. It is the underlying form that ties the elements of the work together & gives it meaning. Every piece includes certain aspects from the 6 elements that have been thought about & placed that way to be more visually appealing, or to fit a theme or meaning. The way lines and shapes and certain imagery is placed can completely change the way the artwork...
